So I’ve been grabbing lunch at the same place Ana took me too, hoping to run into her outside work. Maybe a bit creepy and stalkerish, but I had a reason.
Eventually I ran into her and got her a coffee. She didn’t look thrilled to see me.
I asked, “Did you really have a call from your son the last time we ate here?"
She looked down at the table, and then she shook her head. “Sorry.”
“So you weren’t interested in having lunch with me. You were doing your job.”
“I’m really sorry.”
“No you’re not,” I told her. “None of you are. You’re all hiding something, and you’re all freaking me out.”
She grabbed my arm. “David, it’s nothing to be scared of, OK, but you’re going to have to drop it. Stop looking for pictures about The Village at work. Stop snooping around. Stop thinking about it. Kill that wiki of yours.”
My blood ran cold. “You’ve been watching me.”
“Yes.”
“And Mark?”
“He hasn’t. You’re being watched, David. So am I. You need to stop all this.” And then she cocked her head at me and said, “You’ll make both our lives that much easier.”
“And all because I want to find out about The Village. Do you know what it is?”
Ana shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. It’s not important. What is important, is that it’s not for you to know.”
“Enjoy your coffee,” I said, and left her there.
I walked straight back to work. I didn’t want to get escorted up to Human Resources because I had a dark expression on my face, or deal with anything like that. I typed my resignation into an email and hit send.
It was like a huge weight off my chest. I was done with them.
The guy working next to me rolled over in his chair. “Look,” he said, in a whisper. “Do you know anything about The Village?”
I looked at him. Not sure whether he was trying to find out more like me or if he was someone like Ana. Then I said, “Forget it. If you like your job, just stop thinking about it.”
And then I left.
The sunlight was brighter, the air fresher, the parks greener. I was a free man.
That was until I got home.
I celebrated with a few drinks, and I tripped over my coffee table and landed on my back underneath a vent grille and looked up.
A faint glint told me something metallic was behind the grille. When I got up, wobbly, on a chair to remove the grille, I found a camera. You’ll recognize it. I’ve seen it before as well. It looks just like this camera I posted in The Village Wiki.
They’re watching me.
I’m blogging this last post to the wiki quickly, because I’m going to get out of the house and report this to the police. They’re watching me.
So, be seeing you.
I hope.
