The Veteran

Today I had a real shock. I met the veteran I watch on my monitors every day, right here in the lobby where I work.
It was early morning, and I hadn’t gotten up to my station yet. He was coming in with me, drinking from a water bottle and dressed in a suit. I held the door for him, but I was totally weirded out. Here was the man I’d been surveilling, and he was in the building!
Since I didn’t know why I was watching him, I was worried. Should I be telling building security?
He asked me for directions to one of the research wings, and I nervously pointed him out to the information desk, where he’d have to get badged and cleared. I was expecting him not to be on the list, but they had his information and had a badge ready to clip to his jacket.
I gave the red headed security guard on my floor a coffee. She didn’t have a name badge, just a patch that said ‘security’ in a large font. But she finally told me her name was Ana (well, she told me her name, but I’ve been changing people’s names on this blog to keep things safer), and thanked me for the coffee. She apologized for having to take me up to HR and I told her not to worry.
“I saw one of the guys in the lobby that I monitor on the screens,” I told her. “How weird is that?”
Ana shrugged. “Don’t think about it too much. It’s not worth it.”
I wanted to pursue it, but let it go, thinking about the last time I hung out with her. When she escorted me up to HR. I didn’t want a repeat.
When I went inside I startled the guy who works near me with his own batch of screens.
“Mark?”
“I was just looking for a pen,” he told me, as he moved back to his own set of screens.
I don’t believe him. I think he was looking through my files and folders, maybe looking to make sure I didn’t have more pictures of The Village.
Maybe he’s spying on me for HR.
More work creepiness.
I should report *him* to HR.
In the meantime, I’ve installed a better search program on my computer. Its got a visual pattern recognition algorithm, and I’ve fed it the pictures of The Village we do have. It’s found a couple files left on public areas of other people’s computers that match Village photos I’ve found so far. Here’s the first item, a video of the road that has the same painted border in the center, as well as similar trees, as I had a picture of earlier.
